Boulder’s Best Pizza (2015): Pizzeria Locale

DiningOut Prime Picks

About Pizzeria Locale, Boulder’s Best Pizza: In 2011, devoted fans of Boulder’s acclaimed Frasca Food and Wine got a more casual outpost to enjoy the cooking of Chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson alongside the choice wines of Master Sommelier Bobby Stuckey. This contemporary pizzeria takes its cues from those found in Naples, the birthplace of the pie.

Pizzas come in personal sizes with thin, blistering crusts fresh from the oven. Pizzeria Locale {1730 Pearl Street, Boulder; 720.709.2244} divides its menu into Le Bianche (white pies) and Le Rosse (red ones), each with its own tempting selection. From the Fico (mozzarella, fig, Gorgonzola, and provolone), to the Burgundian (highlighting black summer truffles), to the Maiale (prosciutto crudo, mozzarella, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and arugula), there’s an adventurous combination for every palate.

Pizza isn’t the only attraction here. Pizzeria Locale also serves inventive Italian salads, contorni (side dishes like roasted zucchini and a lamb-pork meatball), and dolce (sweets like gelato and Budino butterscotch pudding). Of course, Stuckey’s wine selection is available for pairing with every dish.

In partnership with Chipotle, Pizzeria Locale has gone on to open fast casual versions of the restaurant in Denver, Kansas City, and soon in Cincinnati. Mackinon-Patterson and Stuckey also plan to open a new eatery in Denver’s Union Station next year.

Runners-Up: Lucky Pie Pizza & Taphouse (Louisville), Basta
