Landlocked But Not Lobster-Lacked
The closest thing we’ve got to sea breeze here in Denver is that occasional gust from Cherry Creek, but does that mean we can’t indulge in some oceanic goodness this Labor Day? Absolutely not. Who said we can’t have our mountains and eat some lobster too?
So, while some of us are plotting last-minute escapes to the mountains (or the backyard kiddie pool) for Labor Day, Maine Shack has a different kind of escape plan. A culinary one. That involves DIY lobster roll kits. And as someone who spent a good amount of time growing up in New England trying to convince my mom that lobster should be our family’s holiday meal of choice—no matter the holiday—I can’t think of a more deliciously fitting way to celebrate not laboring away on Labor Day than by noshing on some lobster rolls.
DIY lobster kits for Labor Day
The kits come in two sizes, and for the math-averse, here’s the lowdown: With the bigger one, you get more lobster and more of those iconic whoopie pies. Decisions, decisions.
If you’re not fluent in East Coast, a whoopie pie is kind of like if a cake and a sandwich had a baby. It’s sweet, it’s delightful, and it’s the perfect chaser after you’ve scarfed down a lobster roll…or two. No one said these kits must be shared.
If you are fluent in the language of lobstermen, you’ll want to get an order of steamahs when you go pick up your take-home kit. Because where else can you get steamers in Denver? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure Maine Shack is it. And they are as authentic as can be, even come with a bowl of water for you to dump them in to wash off the sand before you dunk them in some hot melted butter—the way god intended.
You can pre-order your kits on the website now for pickup at the Central Street location in Denver between Aug. 31 and Sept. 4. The 1 lb kit ($95) gets you a pound of fresh claw and knuckle meat, six New England split top buns, mayo, butter, and two large whoopie pies. The 2 lb kit doubles all of the above except for the price, coming in at $180. And it’ll be worth every penny.
