The Eastern Mediterranean and the Iberian Peninsula don’t share a border, but they share a philosophy: small plates, communal tables, and the understanding that a meal is something you linger over. Just like Atlanta’s vibe.
Atlanta’s appetite for mezze, pintxos, and slow-grilled kebabs has produced a solid circuit of Eastern Mediterranean and Iberian spots worth knowing. The metro has quietly built a credible collection of restaurants working in this tradition, from Lebanese grill houses open past midnight in Duluth to Basque pintxos bars in West Midtown that make a strong case for a three-hour Tuesday dinner.
Here’s where to go depending on your mood and your budget. Whether you want to order everything and share, or you want to just sit down like you mean it, there is something for everyone.
Agora Midtown
This family-owned Turkish and Greek spot in Midtown has been doing its thing since 2006, which in Atlanta restaurant years is practically ancestral. The mixed grill is the move: lamb chops, chicken and adana kebabs, all landing together on one plate with aromatic rice and a balsamic-dressed salad. The mezze table fills out well around it, with baba ganoush, spanakopita, and tabouli rounding out the spread. The room is casual, the outdoor seating is well suited to groups, and the cocktail list doesn’t try to upstage the food. If you want a relaxed, no-fuss introduction to Turkish and Greek cooking without driving far, this is it. Don’t skip the rice pudding if they bring it out. 92 Peachtree Pl. NE, Atlanta, agoracuisine.com
Mezze-Potamia
A weekday-only Turkish and Mediterranean café, Mezze-Potamia is tucked into a Decatur office complex that most people drive past without knowing it exists. The menu runs through hummus, tabbouleh, baba ganoush, grilled meats, sandwiches, soups, and baklava, all made in-house, and the Turkish coffee is the real thing. The pace here is unhurried in a way that Downtown lunch spots rarely manage. It’s the kind of place that becomes a weekly habit once you find it, and regulars tend to keep it to themselves for good reason. Call ahead for larger groups since the space is small and fills up fast on weekday afternoons. 160 Clairemont Ave., Ste. 160, Decatur, mezze-potamia.com
Mazaj
Mazaj is a Lebanese resto-cafe in Duluth where the hookah flows and the crowd stays late. The Iraqi kebab is the sleeper hit on a menu full of crowd favorites, the kunafeh is the kind of dessert people drive across town for, and the mixed grill feeds a table generously. They’re open until midnight Sunday through Thursday and 1:30 a.m. on weekends, which puts them in a category of their own when the rest of metro Atlanta has already closed its kitchens. Go hungry, go late, bring people. 3312 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., Ste. 1, Duluth, mazajatl.com
Delbar
Translating to “heart, captured” in Farsi, Delbar earns the name. Owner Fares Kargar built the menu around his Iranian family recipes, and the result draws on Persian cooking with Israeli, Turkish, and Lebanese notes woven in. The menu is designed for sharing: spreads and small bites to start, a full section dedicated to tahdig, the beloved Persian crispy rice dish, and meats. The dill labneh with house bread is non-negotiable at the start. The lamb neck is falling-off-the-bone tender. The chinjeh, prime sirloin marinated in saffron and yogurt, is why people book ahead. Finish with baklava ice cream or the pistachio lava cake with cardamom ice cream. Delbar earned a Michelin Guide feature in 2022 and now has three locations: Inman Park, Buckhead and Alpharetta. The Inman Park original still draws a wait on weekends and even weeknights are packed at every location, so it is worth making a reservation. Multiple locations, delbaratl.com
Buena Vida Tapas & Sol
Right off the Beltline in Old Fourth Ward, Buena Vida draws its inspiration from southern Spain. Specifically, the hippie-chic coastlines of Ibiza and the markets of Andalusia, and the vibe tracks accordingly: breezy, sun-drenched, built for lingering. Co-owner Juan Sebastian Calle imports ingredients from Spain through his family’s food company, which shows up in the quality of the charcuterie and the depth of a wine list that runs more than half Spanish. The paella is made on the outdoor patio and worth timing your visit around. Wednesday evenings are candlelit with wine specials; while Saturday brunch brings live music. About half the menu is vegetarian or vegan, and the margarita flight is a reliable crowd-pleaser. Validated parking in the attached deck makes the logistics easy. 385 N. Angier Ave. NE, Ste. 100, Atlanta, buenavidatapas.com
Cooks & Soldiers
A 2024 James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality, Cooks & Soldiers has been setting the standard for Basque cooking in Atlanta since 2014. The menu moves from traditional styled pintxos snacks served on toasted bread, through Basque-inspired small plates and into the wood-fired asador section where the serious grilling happens. The bikini sandwich, melted white American cheese with jamón ibérico on buttered bread cut into triangles, is the dish that makes regulars out of first-timers. The bar carries Basque and Spanish wines, txakoli, and ciders. Happy hour is worth knowing about, and the kitchen accommodates vegetarian and gluten-free diners well. Dinner only; book ahead. 691 14th St. NW, Atlanta, cooksandsoldiers.com
Boqueria
Atlanta’s outpost of this Barcelona-style tapas bar sits inside Colony Square in Midtown, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing Peachtree Street and a patio that earns its keep year-round. The menu covers the Spanish classics—patatas bravas, pan con tomate, grilled octopus, hand-carved jamón ibérico—along with paella and a solid roster of seasonal specials. The wine list skews heavily Spanish, the sangria is made properly rather than from a bag, and social hour Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. offers $7 tapas and $8 mini martinis. Good for a long shared dinner, a pre-show meal before the High Museum or Atlanta Symphony, or a date night that doesn’t need a reason. 1221 Peachtree St. NE, Ste. 110, Atlanta, boqueriarestaurant.com/location/atl-colony-square
