It’s National Margarita Day (aka the national day of the official drink of having fun) Frozen or on the rocks, original or flavored, salt or Tajín rim, the many varieties of this celebratory drink leave room for individual preferences and endless mixtures to be sipped on. Before we toast and bode you safe travels to our award-winning list of the best variations of the beloved beverage, let’s take a trip through the history of this popular drink.

History of the Margarita

The tequila cocktail begins in Mexico where the agave plant is grown and produced since the time of the Aztecs in 1000 B.C. Around 250-300 A.D. the Aztecs began distilling the juice of the agave for ceremonial purposes to worship their gods. In the 1600s, the Spanish noble Marquis of Altamira opened the first large-scale distillery. The still-popular Cuervo family began mass distribution from their distillery in 1758. Over two thousand years of history, it wasn’t until 1938 that the famous tequila, lime juice, and triple sec were mixed and named after a woman, Margarita, whose name translates to daisy.
