Less than six months after announcing its closure, Arnaldo Richards’ Picos revealed today that it will not shutter, but instead relocate—signaling a transition rather than a farewell.
“Our community has given us an opportunity we never thought possible,” said the restaurant’s namesake, Arnaldo Richards in a release. “Thanks to them, we have gone from closing the book to writing a new chapter.”
Picos has been a fixture of the Upper Kirby neighborhood for more than a decade, and a part of Houston’s culinary scene as a whole for 42 years. Beyond its popular shaker margaritas and festive happy hour atmosphere, the restaurant is lauded for showcasing Mexico’s regional fare offered during lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch.

When news of the restaurant’s closure broke last August, it was met with widespread disappointment from loyal Houstonians. There was a glimmer of hope in September, when a follow-up announcement revealed that an outpouring of community support would allow Picos to remain open through the beginning of the new year.
While the details of where exactly Picos will reemerge in Houston have yet to be announced, a release promises that the restaurant will continue to showcase the foundational Mexican traditions and warm hospitality that have defined it for more than four decades.

For now, Picos will continue operations at its current home at 3601 Kirby Drive, with the move expected to happen over the next six to eight months. The transition period will allow the team to prepare, and details on a reopening timeline are expected to be shared later this winter or early spring.
“Our loyal guests are the heart of Picos, and we’re thrilled to bring them along on this journey,” said Richards. “We look forward to welcoming everyone to our new home, where we’ll continue to celebrate the flavors and traditions of the seven culinary regions of Mexico.”
