Oktoberfest may have started in Munich in 1810, but Houston knows how to make the tradition its own. This fall, breweries, beer halls, neighborhood bars and restaurants across the Houston area are raising a stein with German-style beers, brats, live music, stein-hoisting contests and plenty of lederhosen.
From Downtown beer gardens to neighborhood hangouts and Galveston getaways, here are the Oktoberfest celebrations to put on your calendar.
Little Woodrow’s
The Houston-born neighborhood sports bar brings Oktoberfest to locations across Houston throughout September and October, with stein-hoisting competitions, seasonal beers, themed cocktails and plenty of backyard-bar fun. The chain puts its own playful spin on the celebration with Dachtoberfest Wiener dog races at its Babcock, Midtown, EaDo and Tomball locations, where dachshunds compete in bracket-style races. Babcock’s September 19 celebration also features a pretzel ring toss, festive games and a best-dressed dog contest, while EaDo’s September 26 event adds dog-friendly vendors and a stein-hoisting competition. Eureka Heights
The Heights neighborhood brewery celebrates its 10th annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 26 with an afternoon of German beer, food and polka music. Eureka Heights will pour its beloved Oaked Von Wolfhausen while pop-up, Kortex BBQ serves up a German-inspired spread, from toasted pretzels with Wolfhausen beer cheese and Mini Boss mustard to Bavarian egg rolls stuffed with smoked pork and sauerkraut, and a sausage plate with German hot sausage, potato salad and spiced apples. The Heights fine-casual neighborhood restaurant by chef Shawn Gawle is bringing a German-inspired spin to the restaurant’s Sunday Supper series with a one-night-only Oktoberfest feast on Sunday, September 27 from 5 to 9 p.m. The family-style menu features Bavarian favorites including golden pretzels with obatzda (cheese spread) and Düsseldorf mustard, currywurst, Jägerschnitzel with mushroom gravy, house-made spaetzle and warm apple strudel, alongside special pours of German beer, Riesling and Sylvaner. Karbach Brewing
Houston craft brewery Karbach Brewing Co. returns with three festive weekends of Karbachtoberfest. Expect plenty of Karbach beer, gourmet brats, stein-hoisting contests, live music and the crowd-favorite wiener dog races, with each weekend bringing its own lineup of entertainment. Saint Arnold Brewing Company
Texas’ oldest craft brewery and Houston beer institution since 1994 turns its Downtown beer garden into a German-inspired celebration for Oktoberfest, running Friday, September 18 through Sunday, October 4. The family-friendly, free-to-attend festivities span three weekends, with special beer tappings, German-inspired food, live music, markets, games and costume contests. Each Friday brings a new lineup of German-style small-batch beers, including Festbier, Pilsner, Schwarzbier, Pale Weizenbock and an oak-aged Märzen. Oktoberfest Nation
We Love Pop Ups, the team behind Frosty’s Christmas Bar and Oktoberfest Nation Chicago, is bringing a monthlong Oktoberfest celebration to EaDo this fall. The inaugural Oktoberfest Nation Houston will be running every weekend throughout October. Tickets are sold by day, so guests can choose which dates they want to attend. The 21-and-up festival will pour official Hofbräu München beer imported from Munich, with traditional Bavarian brews paired with giant soft pretzels, bratwurst, sausages and other German-inspired favorites. Downtown’s POST Houston, a former post office turned dining, cultural and entertainment destination, takes Oktoberfest to its five-acre Skylawn rooftop on Saturday, October 10 from 4 to 10 p.m. The free, 21-and-up celebration pairs sweeping skyline views with German beer, seasonal bites, stein-hoisting competitions, Bavarian costume contests and live entertainment, including performances by the Das ist Keine Kunst Folk Dance Troupe and Prost Polka Band. Galveston Island Oktoberfest
Make it a road trip and head to Galveston Island for its 44th annual Oktoberfest, a Gulf Coast take on the traditional German celebration that gives back to the community. The festival returns October 23 and 24 to the streets surrounding First Lutheran Church at 24th and Winnie streets in historic Downtown Galveston. The free, family-friendly event brings two days of live German music and dancing, traditional fare and imported beer, with bratwurst, smoked sausage and the Friday-night and Saturday Wurstabendessen sausage dinner among the highlights. If a blowout bash isn’t your style, Bayou & Bottle, the bourbon and whiskey bar and restaurant at the Four Seasons Downtown, offers a more laid-back way to get into the Oktoberfest spirit with a Bavarian-inspired plate designed for sharing. Priced at $42, the spread includes soft pretzel rods with cheese dip, Bavarian bratwurst, pastrami, Cambozola and Muenster cheeses, sauerkraut and cornichons. Head to Galveston Bay Brewing and raise a stein October 23 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at its annual Oktoberfest celebration. The waterfront brewery in Clear Lake Shores, just south of Houston, is known for its laid-back taproom, rotating lineup of craft beers and coastal-inspired food. If you’re looking to get your fill of German beer and comfort food this Oktoberfest season, head to Watershed in Meyerland, a locally owned neighborhood pub and bar-and-grill that opened in 2019 with a focus on scratch-made food, craft beer and a welcoming, casual atmosphere. Texas Biergarten
Oktoberfest is always the theme at Texas Biergarten in Missouri City, a family-owned restaurant that puts a Lone Star spin on German comfort food.
