What makes a NYC restaurant fun isn’t always easy to pin down. It’s not about unique decor, a neon sign, or a cocktail with smoke coming out of it. Most often, it’s about how the place makes you feel while you’re there and the overall vibe.

Maybe the room is buzzing with conversation and good music, or the staff knows just how to be attentive without being overbearing. Maybe the food surprises you in a way that makes you want to drag your friends along next time. Fun can be a tiny jazz club, a late-night diner, or a NYC neighborhood bar where everyone seems to know your name (or at least your go-to cocktail).

The vibe is cool, the food hits, and the crowd feels like it’s there for the same reason you are. Right now in NYC, a handful of spots are doing exactly that.

St. Mazie

After just a few steps inside you can tell St. Mazie is doing something right as live jazz music fills the main floor, which happens every night. Grab a seat at the bar, or a table by the stage, and enjoy the music while also having a deep conversation with your date over a mezze plate and glass of wine.

Out back, a quaint garden offers a slightly secret spot for that quiet NYC moment. Downstairs, the Supper Club hosts a rotating mix of intimate events from flamenco nights to underground burlesque. No matter which spot you choose, the drinks are well-made, the Mediterranean food is comforting, and the overall energy hits just right. 345 Grand St., Williamsburg, Brooklyn, stmazie.com

Embark on a fun Parisian vacation without leaving Manhattan. At least, that’s what it feels like when stepping into Fouquet’s in Tribeca. Brass, velvet, and dark wood give the overall hotel and its signature restaurant a polished, intimate vibe, and the low lighting makes it perfect for a date night.

Big windows let in just enough of Manhattan to remind you where you are, but mostly it feels like its own world: a little upscale, a little secret, and very easy to settle into. The food leans French,  featuring dishes such as Dover Sole Meunière, Raviole Du Dauphine with morels, Fouquet’s Onion Soup with three cheeses, and a full raw bar. So next time you want an adventure in town, have a blast at this hotel brassiere. 456 Greenwich St., Tribeca, hotelsbarriere.com

Le Dive

This natural wine bar is always packed thanks to its lively vibe, both inside and out. Take a seat outdoors for people-watching, or sidle up to an indoor table and bring some games. While the seasonal wine list slays, make sure to peek into the cocktail menu too. On it you’ll everything from a Dirty Vesper to a French 75 spiked with lemongrass.

On the food side, the small plates and mains prove perfect for the occasion. Think raw oysters, charcuterie, escargot, and a few bigger plates like the famous Le Dive Burger. It tends to get loud here, but that’s what makes it fun. 37 Canal St., Lower East Side; and 192 7th Ave. S., West Village, ledivenyc.com

There’s a reason a lot of buzz surrounds schmuck., it’s exactly the kind of spot you want to hit before heading out for the night in NYC, or even make your whole night. The main “living room” mixes midcentury-modern and vintage seating in a way that feels retro but not cheesy, and the smaller “kitchen table” is louder and more casual, perfect for a drink and a little people-watching.

Cocktails are creative without being intimidating, with options like the Larb Gai (somehow it tastes exactly like the Thai dish it’s inspired by), and a Ramos gin fizz that comes with a hint of passion fruit macaron vibes. Overall, this East Village bar is playful, confident, and welcoming, which is exactly why people keep talking about it. 97 1st Ave, East Village, schmucknyc.com

The Nines

Getting a table at The Nines isn’t exactly easy — reservations disappear fast — but once inside, it makes sense why everyone’s trying. The room is dark in that intentionally glamorous way, wrapped in red velvet with low lighting that immediately shifts the mood from New York rush to full-on supper club fantasy.

There’s a piano anchoring the space, with someone softly playing during dinner. However, as the night goes on, the whole place turns into a party, complete with a DJ. Martinis are strong and classic, and the caviar baked potato is what everyone talks about: indulgent, a little over-the-top, and exactly right for the setting. 9 Great Jones St,, NoHo, ninesnyc.com

Maison Close

Maison Close is one of those places that doesn’t just serve food, visiting the restaurant is a full-on European party experience. By 3 p.m., it turns into a proper party, complete with people dancing on tables and loud pop music flowing from the speakers. The food is better than you’d expect for a place this lively, with classic French dishes crafted to crave. Drinks are strong and come fast, and the music keeps the energy high. 15 Watts St., SoHo, maisoncloserestaurant.com

Manhatta

Manhatta has some of the best views in the city, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows that put the skyline on full display, day or night. The restaurant itself feels modern and polished, but there’s enough energy in the air to make it exciting rather than stuffy.

Upstairs, the dining room turns multi-course meals into an experience, and an award-winning wine list that makes pairing a breeze. The bar and lounge downstairs is where the things really get hopping. Cocktails are fresh, creative, and classic, and there’s enough buzz that you’ll forget you’re at a restaurant instead of a downtown club. 28 Liberty St., Financial District, manhattarestaurant.com

Opera House

Tucked beneath the iconic Chinese Tuxedo, the Opera House feels like you have just been let in on a secret. The dining room goes all in on the atmosphere with soaring ceilings, gold accents, and low, flattering light, as well as design details that reference the historic Chinese theatre that once occupied the space.

But it’s the cocktails where things really start to get interesting. Each one pulls inspiration from Chinese opera stories, so ingredients get a little unexpected: think salted egg chestnut syrup or doubanjiang agave. Bonus points for the complimentary bar snacks — mala-spiced chickpeas and lotus root chips keep appearing just when another round sounds like a good idea. You might not have to act out a great ballad while imbibing, but you just might want to. 5 Doyers St., Chinatown, operahouse.nyc

Thai Diner

Decked out in fake palms, grass, and other green things to give diners a sense of place, Thai Diner works at almost any hour. Whether coming for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even a late dinner, it’s exactly where everyone wants to be.

This SoHo hotspot keeps the bones of the old-school diner it used to be, but swaps pancakes for Thai comfort food that’s equal parts nostalgic and a little unexpected. It’s usually buzzing around the closely-packed tables, but the plates are always clean, the cocktails strong, and the food on point. Address: 186 Mott Street, SoHo, thaidiner.com

The Corner Store

The Corner Store has a vibe that absolutely steals the show. It’s one of the city’s hottest celebrity hangouts, and the bar is stacked with a martini list worth a whole night of sampling. While the food is solid (don’t skip the Wagyu French Dip or the Lobster and Caviar Roll), the scene is the main event.

It’s the perfect spot for a night out when you want to see and be seen, sip something strong, listen to the top hits, and feel like you’re in the center of everything happening in the city. 475 W. Broadway, SoHo, thecornerstoresoho.com

Lure Fishbar

A SoHo staple for over 20 years, Lure Fishbar is still one of the sexiest reservations in the neighborhood. The yacht-inspired room, complete with polished wood, leather booths, and soft lighting, leans sleek. At the same time, the energy hits that sweet spot between a polished dinner destination and a place where the night can easily stretch longer than planned.

The bar is almost always packed, and the food is more than worth overordering. Think sushi, oysters, crispy rice, and bigger platters of seafood to share. It’s lively, romantic, and fun, wrapped into an underground hangout that everyone loves.142 Mercer St., SoHo, lurefishbar.com

Sushi on Me

Sushi on Me is like crashing a sushi-fueled house party where everyone (chefs included) is fully committed to the chaos. Think live jazz, bottomless sake, and a counter packed shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers who quickly feel like friends. Dinner is fast and structured with 12 pieces of nigiri served one by one to start. But while the food certainly sings, the real draw is the wild atmosphere.

It’s cash-only, one hour per seating, and there’s no pretense: if you’re expecting a quiet, refined omakase, this isn’t the spot. But if you’re in the mood for a one-of-a-kind sushi experience that’s loud, hilarious, indulgent, and oddly intimate, Sushi on Me delivers. At the end, you’ll feel like you just spent the night at a friend’s epic dinner party rather than a simple restaurant. 71-26 Roosevelt Ave., Jackson Heights, Queens; and 742 Driggs Ave., Williamsburg, Brooklyn, no website

Le Bar Penelope is new, cool, and already timeless. The space is dressed up just enough to feel special with gorgeous patterned wallpaper, sparkling chandeliers, and plush seating made for long reservations. The bar is sleek and sexy, perfect for sipping one of the craft cocktails. Order a cache of small plates too and share them with all your new and old friends. It’s a natural pick for girls’ nights, birthdays, or any celebration that calls for a little something extra. 14 E 60th St., Upper East Side, lebarpenelope.com

Chelsea Living Room

Need a place where you can pop in for a martini after work, drop by late on a weekend, or grab a table with a group? Chelsea Living Room is the place. The dim lighting, intricate wallpaper, and lounge area gives the place a polished energy. The cocktails are strong and well-made, with Martinis that always hit the right note. The food menu leans upscale American bistro with little hints of French flair.

People naturally gravitate toward the bar, so it’s a great place to mingle. You just might find yourself there for happy hour, and then staying late into the night. 243 W, 14th St,, Chelsea, chelsealivingroomnyc.com

The Office of Mr. Moto

The Office of Mr. Moto feels like stepping into a stylish, secret world where history and sushi collide. Upstairs, it’s polished and intimate, with low lighting and an intimate omakase bar. Downstairs, the speakeasy is one of a kind, with a self-playing piano that sets a cool, relaxed soundtrack for multiple rounds of cocktails. The whole place is sexy, a little mysterious, and perfect for any occasion that requires a dose of fun with the meal. 120 St. Mark’s Place, East Village, dearmrmoto.com
