Getting good bagels in Phoenix used to be a real challenge. Thankfully, that’s changed in the past 10 years as a slew of small-batch bagel creators have debuted in the Valley.

From one shop that’s been in business for decades to a few small-batch creators that have developed strong followings, here are 10 places in metro Phoenix to get a great bagel.

Bagelfeld’s Bagels

Bagelfeld’s owner, Charlie Blonkendfeld, was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Phoenix, and wanted to bring authentic New York City-style bagels to the Valley. He started crafting bagels back in 2020 and selling at a farmers’ market. Then, he rented a kitchen for the production, but the bagels were so popular he eventually opened two brick and mortar locations in metro Phoenix.

Aside from the size of the kitchen and storefront, Blonkenfeld keeps things the same. The bagel dough is made with high-gluten flour, salt, yeast, malt, and water, making each ring pillowy and easy to pull apart. These days order a variety of flavors including Asiago Cheese, Everything, Jalapeno Cheddar, Blueberry, Salt, Plain, Sesame, and more. Pick up a tub of the luscious housemade cream cheese, either plain or spiked with lemon and herbs, garlic, smoked salmon, and even brown butter and honey.

Keep in mind, the bagels tend to sell out on the weekends by 10 a.m., so Bagelfeld’s advises customers to arrive between 7 and 8 a.m. to ensure you get your fix. Also to note, the Phoenix location is currently closed due to a fire, but Bagelfeld’s has plans to reopen this location in the coming months. 5154 S. Rural Rd., Tempe, bagelfeld.com

DJ’s Bagel Café

Located in a strip mall in Fountain Hills, DJ’s Bagel Café has a true deli feel. Think sandwiches, omelets, and breakfast bagels littering the menu. Find the bagels stuffed into metal baskets, with each flavor written above.

On the savory side, choose from: Garlic, Jalapeno, 7 Grain, Sundried Tomato, Sourdough, Onion, and Pumpernickel. Then on the sweeter side, popular choices include French Toast and Cinnamon Raisin. Enjoy your bagels plain or as a sandwich stuffed with scrambled eggs, ham, bologna, sausage, and/or cheese. 13693 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, no website

Hot Bagels relocated from New Jersey to Arizona back in 2001 and brought East Coast bagels to the Valley of the Sun decades ago. There’s a lot that makes these bagels stand out. For starters, they’re all hand rolled, boiled, and baked fresh daily, giving each bagel crispy crust and perfectly chewy interior.

It’s no wonder Hot Bagels sells around 3,000 bagels every day. The bagels come in a plethora of flavors. Dig into Garlic, Poppy, Blueberry, Egg, Spinach, Asiago, Cinnamon Raisin, Everything, Jalapeno, and Chocolate Chip, among others. Diners can enjoy bagel sandwiches with eggs, ham, bacon, sausage, and lox. Multiple locations, azhotbagel.com

Bagelero crafts all its goods in a South Phoenix kitchen and sells them at the Uptown Farmers’ Market (5757 N. Central Ave., Phoenix) on Wednesdays and at the Downtown Phoenix Farmers’ Market (433 N. 3rd St. at the Arizona Center) on Saturdays. The bagels are so good that many in the hospitality industry have taken note.

Now, you can also find the breadballs at establishments like Minnow, Wonderift Coffee, and more. Note, the bagels don’t have a hole, but this allows for a thick, pillowy texture. Lack of holes aside, Bagelero is also known for the inventive flavors such as Rosemary Parmesan Garlic, French Toast, Pizza, and Chile Relleno. Order a bagel plain, with shmear, or with bacon, egg, and cheese. Another option? The Tomato Special, which comes with the customer’s choice of bagel, bacon, a slice of tomato, salt and pepper, and cream cheese.

Bongiorno Bagels

Founded in 2017, the folks behind Bongiorno Bagels have ties to the bagel capital of America–New York City. In fact, the business was founded by Big Apple natives John and Samantha Bongiorno, and Samantha’s father, Ed Cancro. Cancro even cooked in firehouses in New York City when he was a firefighter.

The trio wanted to bring New York City quality bagels back to Gilbert, which is why Bongiorno’s uses the New York Watermaker to create a special water that the shop claims makes the bagel dough the best. The dough is then shaped, kettle boiled, and baked in a 30-year-old revolving deck oven.

Bongiorno claims that these techniques lead to the perfect crispy and chewy texture. Customers can create their own bagel sandwiches and pick from meats and cheeses. Bongiorno also offers a variety of gourmet sandwiches. These include options like The Bongiorno, a mix of chicken cutlet, prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, and pesto, that’s all served on a sesame bagel. 3107 S. Gilbert Rd., Ste. 101, Gilbert, bongiornobagels.com

Bagel Daddies

Bagel Daddies was founded by, you guessed it, a dad. Founder Christopher Fregozo started the company five years ago, and uses a fermented dough for all his bagels. Find him at Uptown Farmers Market (5757 N. Central Ave., Phoenix) on Saturdays, and sample flavors like Jalapeno Cheddar and even heart-shaped Chocolate Chip Bagels. Order the bagels slathered with cream cheese or as a sandwich.

Bonus, you can visit his Instagram feed to see photos of his cute kiddos and announcements when the bagels have been sold out for the day.
