Maple Mei gets a custom pink birthday cake decorated with her name and little maple leaves, which is ordered every year by dog-mom Cora Garcia. The Pembroke Welsh corgi also samples frosting during visits to Three Dog Bakery in Chandler, a responsibility Garcia called a “quality-control check.” It’s a demanding role for someone paid in treats.
For Garcia, the celebrations are a way to spoil a dog who has given her family a lot. “I’ve always told people Maple Mei has a superpower, and that’s healing broken hearts,” she said.
Dog-specific bakeshops make it easy to put that affection into a cookie or cake, with designs as individual as the dogs receiving them. Four-legged children deserve celebration, too, and these three bakeries give them something made for the occasion.
Three Dog Bakery
Cynthia Drager had frequented Three Dog Bakery with her dogs in Texas. When she moved to Arizona, she missed the shop and decided to open one herself. Her Chandler franchise opened in February 2024, and its most popular cake is a small peanut butter bone cake ($26.99), finished with frosting and chopped peanuts around the sides.
Drager said she bakes with ingredients such as flour, eggs, and unsweetened applesauce, leaving out added sugar and salt, and uses fruit and vegetable powders for custom colors. Carob replaces chocolate in the decorations and lettering.
For the aforementioned dog Maple Mei’s third birthday, Garcia is planning an early-October “Bier & Barks” party with pup cups served in miniature beer mugs. Baker Drager is making pretzel-shaped cookies for the Oktoberfest theme. In the past, she has made football- and basketball-shaped cookies for Maple Mei’s corgi-racing events, each personalized with a dog’s name. The guest list this year has gone to the dogs, and so has the dessert table.
Drager has baked for dogs celebrating being cancer-free and for parents-to-be who let their dog reveal pink or blue frosting tucked inside a cake. “I feel so blessed that I get to be a part of that huge moment in their lives,” she said.
Some smaller celebrations, she shared, can start with a pupcake or a Pawty Cake cookie, shaped like a tiered birthday cake and personalized with the dog’s name. Or, the Barkin’ for S’more that sandwiches frosting between peanut butter cookies, with carob decoration on top.
As for booking your own pup party, call or stop in to order, allowing at least three days for a custom cake. Drager also tries to keep cakes available for same-day personalization. Of course, dogs are welcome to visit and sample the treats any time–and Maple Mei already demonstrated how seriously that job should be taken. 1085 W. Smelly Dog
Gunner recognizes his birthday-cake box even though it comes home only once a year. His owner, Clare Zenk, still makes the 30- to 40-minute trip to Smelly Dog for it, giving the bakery creative control over designs that have included Scooby-Doo and a zombie theme fitting for his late-October birthday.
“He gets so excited because he knows that smell,” Zenk said. Gunner has had six birthday cakes from the Phoenix business, with his seventh birthday approaching in October, and usually shares the celebration with Zenk’s mother’s dogs.
Best part, the staff remembers the occasion. Zenk said Liz at Smelly Dog contacts her to ask when Gunner’s cake should be ready, sparing her an annual reminder. The team has kept in touch since Zenk moved farther away, remembering details about her family that make the longer drive worthwhile.
Owner Jackie Brenda bought the grooming and daycare service Smelly Dog in 2008, and added the bakery in 2010. Standard cakes (from $24.99) come in round or bone shapes in pink, blue, or white, with the dog’s name added. Customers can also request a custom design and color. Brenda has incorporated dogs’ faces and favorite toys into the decorations and has even made cakes for canine quinceañeras, celebrating a female dog’s 15th birthday. Those milestones stand out to Brenda, who said cakes for dogs celebrating their later birthdays are tender assignments.
“It is important that we get the details right so both our human and canine customers can have the moment they want, and then memories that will live on,” she said.
Beyond Gunner, the dog connection comes full circle for Zenk, a dog trainer, who passes that baked love along to her own clients, sometimes arriving with a cupcake or cookie when their dogs have birthdays. A small bakery treat gives her another way to make those families feel remembered.
When ordering, allow at least three days for a standard cake and a week for specialty designs. Birthday cookies and cupcakes without customization may be available for walk-in purchases while supplies last. Bully Bros Bakery
Pups Mozy and Malone’s names are baked into the menu at Bully Bros Bakery, the Mesa business Victoria Stout started in 2021 after adopting the two rescue dogs. The bakery’s origin story describes her aim of supporting animal rescue and giving bully breeds a positive spotlight.
The menu lists a six-inch, two-layer cake ($65) with personalized piping and a choice of flavor and frosting color. Flavor options include Peanut Butta’ Banana and Bacon’ Me Crazy. For smaller party favors, Mutt Pops adapt cake pops for dogs.
The namesake donuts offer another way to celebrate. The Malone combines blueberry and rosemary, while The Mozy pairs peanut butter and carob with peanut maple frosting and coconut shreds.
Bully Bros operates from a home bakery, with online orders and scheduled weekend pickup or delivery. Check the ordering calendar and confirm the lead time for a particular design before planning the party. Some products are also sold through Bark Avenue Pet Supply in Mesa and Gilbert, so a birthday shopping trip can include a treat for the guest of honor.
