Houston’s nightlife scene is getting a taste of la dolce vita. Otium, a new Italian-inspired cocktail lounge from Decorum Concepts, will open Friday, July 31, at 5020 Kirby Drive in the Upper Kirby neighborhood.
The lounge is the latest venture from owners Josh Reiner and Mikael Aldine, who bring more than 20 years of combined hospitality and event experience to the concept. Designed for guests ages 25 and older, Otium will pair Italian-influenced cocktails, imported spirits and wines with shareable food, music and a polished late-night atmosphere.
The concept takes its name from the ancient Roman idea of “otium con dignità,” or “leisure with dignity.” Rather than treating downtime as an afterthought, Otium is built around the idea that an evening out should be enjoyed with purpose—and preferably with a well-made drink in hand.
That philosophy carries into the beverage program, which will feature Italian wines, Champagne, regional liqueurs and rare spirits imported from Italy. Signature cocktails include the Otium Spritz, made with Select Aperitivo, white peach puree, prosecco and soda, and the Sbagliato Rosé, which combines Campari, sweet vermouth and sparkling rosé.
Other offerings include the Giardino Verde, a blend of gin, basil, lemon, bianco vermouth and soda, and the Dolce Dar Niente, made with bourbon, blood orange, lemon, honey syrup and amaro.
For those looking for more theater with their drinks, the Diadema Martini Service will bring an olive oil fat-washed martini to the table in a frozen bottle nestled in dry ice inside a custom wooden presentation box. The drink is finished tableside with drops of olive oil and fresh rosemary.
A limoncello and white chocolate martini will offer another indulgent option, blending limoncello, white chocolate liqueur, vanilla vodka, lemon and blossom water before being topped with lemon zest or shaved white chocolate.
The food menu is designed for grazing rather than a full sit-down meal, with flatbreads, bruschetta and assorted boards intended for sharing.
Inside, the lounge will feature natural wood, layered textures, custom furnishings, greenery and soft lighting, creating a setting that aims to feel intimate without losing the energy of a night out. “We wanted to create more than a cocktail lounge; we wanted to create a destination where people can enjoy themselves while still embracing the refined lifestyle,” the Otium team said in a statement.
Otium will be open Thursday through Saturday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., and will enforce a dress code of business casual, cocktail, or upscale evening attire, and all guests must be 25 or older.
