Houston’s love affair with steak was on full display Thursday, October 15, as some of the city’s top chefs gathered at POST Houston for DiningOut’s fourth annual RARE Steak Championship. More than 25 restaurants went head-to-head in a sizzling showdown of premium beef, creative culinary techniques, and cocktails, with plenty of bragging rights on the line.
The annual event transformed the former Barbara Jordan Post Office in Downtown into a carnivore’s playground, where guests sampled unlimited steak bites, sipped cocktails, and cast their votes for their favorites. From classic steakhouse preparations to inventive dishes that pushed well beyond the traditional meat-and-potatoes formula, the evening offered a taste of Houston’s diverse culinary talent.
This year’s biggest winners included Uchi, which swept both the People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice awards in the new VIP omakase competition, and Guard and Grace, which earned first place in two People’s Choice categories. Newcomer Mack Allen’s also made a strong showing, taking the top Judges’ Choice honor for Traditional Steak, while Barbacana impressed the judges with its creative approach to beef.
Sponsored by Buckhead Meat & Seafood, the competition featured two main steak categories: Traditional, recognizing the art of a perfectly executed steak, and Creative, where chefs were encouraged to think outside the box. A separate cocktail competition put the city’s bartenders in the spotlight, while a new VIP omakase experience added another layer to the festivities.
Professional judges and festival attendees each selected their favorites, resulting in two sets of winners across all four categories.
One of this year’s biggest additions was an exclusive six-course omakase experience for VIP ticketholders, inspired by the Japanese tradition of leaving the meal in the chef’s hands. The experience brought together culinary talent from Uchi, Azumi, Willie G’s, Hidden Omakase, and other participating chefs for a more intimate tasting experience away from the main festival floor.
When the votes were tallied, Uchi emerged as the clear favorite, claiming first place from both the judges and the crowd with its smoked salmon tartare with avocado wasabi crema and smoked trout roe. Willie G’s Seafood followed in second place for People’s Choice and third for Judges’ Choice, while Hidden Omakase and Azumi also earned spots on the podium.
For steak purists, the Traditional category was all about letting the beef shine. With some of Houston’s most recognizable steakhouse names in the running, the competition was particularly fierce. Guard and Grace won over the crowd, earning first place in People’s Choice Traditional Steak. Vic & Anthony’s followed in second, while Brenner’s Steakhouse and Brenner’s on the Bayou shared third.
The judges, however, had a different favorite. Mack Allen’s, the sprawling new steakhouse from restaurateur Mack McDonald, took first place in Judges’ Choice Traditional Steak. Pearl & Vine earned second, while Vic & Anthony’s rounded out the top three.
For Mack Allen’s, which recently opened in Houston’s 5POP development, the victory was an impressive early accolade for the newcomer, which competed alongside some of the city’s most established steakhouses.
If Traditional Steak was about honoring the classics, the Creative category gave chefs room to play. Mexquite took home first place in People’s Choice Creative Steak with its ribeye grilled over mesquite charcoal layered with cheese on a corn tortilla. Doris Metropolitan followed in second place, with Sip & Skewer in third.
The judges awarded their top honor to Barbacana, the Houston restaurant known for its inventive, boundary-pushing cooking. Long Weekend claimed second place, while The Palm rounded out the category in third.
The split between the judges’ picks and the crowd favorites highlighted one of the best parts of RARE: with so many interpretations of steak in one place, there was no single definition of a winning dish.
Steak may have been the main attraction, but the cocktail competition gave Houston’s bar talent a chance to steal some of the spotlight. Guard and Grace picked up its second People’s Choice victory of the night, this time alongside Chicken Cock Whiskey, for Best Cocktail. Doris Metropolitan and Weber Ranch Vodka earned second place, followed by The Palm and Elijah Craig in third.
The judges selected Sip & Skewer and Aguasol as their first-place winners. Bar Xolo came in second with its non-alcoholic creation, while Long Weekend and Hendrick’s Gin took third.
By the end of the night, the votes had been counted, the winners had been crowned, and Houston’s fourth RARE Steak Championship had given local diners plenty of new reasons to revisit their favorite steakhouses and discover a few new ones. A portion of the event’s proceeds benefited Blackwood Educational Land Institute, a Houston-area nonprofit dedicated to regenerative agriculture and sustainable food systems.
