Late August has closed the book on dinner service, but it isn’t leaving the table entirely.

The Michelin-recommended restaurant at the Ion has ended regular dining service, bringing a close to a short but celebrated run while shifting into a new phase.

Lucille’s Hospitality Group announced Monday that Late August is transitioning to an events-focused model, with an expanded emphasis on private gatherings and catering. The restaurant will honor all previously booked events through the end of 2026 and remain an active partner in the Ion District. Late August will continue hosting private events and offering catering, allowing guests to experience its food outside of regular dining service.

The move comes as chef Chris Williams and Lucille’s Hospitality Group turn their attention to other projects, most notably the Branch, a new concept slated to open later this summer at the Forme. Members of the Late August team will make the move to the Branch as part of the transition.

“Late August has been an incredibly meaningful chapter for our team, and we are proud of what we created together with the Houston community,” Williams said in a statement. “This transition allows us to continue building through private events and catering while putting our energy behind the next chapter for Lucille’s Hospitality Group. We are grateful for our team that will also be coming with us to The Branch and everyone who has supported us, and we are excited about what’s ahead with The Branch and our other concepts.”

Late August opened at the Ion in 2024, with Williams and executive chef Sergio Hidalgo developing a menu inspired by the intersection of Mexican and African diasporic culinary traditions. The restaurant quickly garnered national attention, landing on Esquire’s list of the Best New Restaurants in America in 2024 and later earning a recommendation from the Michelin Guide.

The change comes during a period of growth for Williams’ hospitality company. In addition to the forthcoming the Branch, Lucille’s Hospitality Group operates Lucille’s in the Museum District and continues to expand its catering and hospitality ventures.

For diners, the announcement brings Late August’s traditional restaurant run to a close just two years after its debut. In that relatively short time, the restaurant earned both local and national recognition while bringing Williams’ exploration of African and Mexican culinary connections to one of Houston’s most prominent innovation districts.
