Houston loves its steakhouses, but how often do you get to sample dishes from more than 25 of the city’s top restaurants in a single night? On Thursday, October 15, DiningOut’s RARE Steak Championship returns to POST Houston in Downtown for its fourth year, bringing together local chefs, sizzling cuts of beef, and a little friendly competition.

The annual event kicks off at 6 p.m., transforming the former Barbara Jordan Post Office into a steak lover’s playground, complete with unlimited tastings, cocktails, live entertainment, and plenty of bragging rights on the line.

The premise is simple: participating restaurants bring their best steak dishes, guests eat their way through the competition, and both professional judges and attendees help decide who comes out on top.

This year’s participants read like a who’s who of Houston’s steakhouse scene, with Doris Metropolitan, Georgia James, Rainbow Lodge, Prime 131, Brenner’s Steakhouse, Guard and Grace, Mack Allen’s, and Marmo among the restaurants competing for top honors.

Sponsored by Buckhead Meat & Seafood, RARE features two steak categories: Best Traditional, which celebrates the art of a perfectly executed steak, and Best Creative, where chefs can push the boundaries with unexpected flavors, techniques, and presentations. Bartenders will also get in on the action, competing for the title of Best Cocktail.

A panel of judges will award Critic’s Choice honors, while attendees can cast their votes for People’s Choice. Between bites, guests can enjoy live music, DJ sets, photo opportunities, and an awards ceremony announcing the evening’s winners.

This year, RARE is introducing an exclusive culinary experience for VIP ticketholders called Omakase. Inspired by the Japanese dining tradition of leaving the meal in the chef’s hands, the experience brings together six acclaimed chefs, including culinary talent from Azumi, Uchi, Willie G’s, and Hidden Omakase, each presenting a unique dish as part of a curated tasting journey.

Rather than navigating the festival’s tasting stations, VIP guests will be treated to a more intimate dining experience showcasing the chefs’ creativity and culinary techniques. The six-course experience is included with VIP admission, along with access to a dedicated VIP space.

Tickets are available now, with three admission options depending on how early you want to get in—and how much steak you plan to tackle: General Admission ($125) allows for entry at 7 p.m., and includes unlimited steak tastings and access to the festival’s entertainment and competitions; First Taste ($175) allows for early entry at 6 p.m. giving guests an extra hour to explore the festival; and VIP ($275) which also grants entry at 6 p.m., plus access to the exclusive Omakase experience and VIP lounge.

A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit Blackwood Educational Land Institute, a Houston-area nonprofit focused on regenerative agriculture and sustainable food systems.

Originally launched in Denver in 2019, RARE has expanded to six cities across the U.S. including Dallas, Atlanta, and New York, but Houston’s annual competition has become a fixture on the city’s fall food festival calendar.

Whether you’re loyal to a classic steakhouse preparation or eager to see what Houston’s most inventive chefs can do with a cut of beef, RARE offers the chance to taste, compare, and cast your vote—all without committing to a single steakhouse reservation.

RARE Steak Championship Houston takes place Thursday, October 15, at POST Houston, 401 Franklin Street. The event is for guests ages 21 and older. Tickets and additional information are available at houston.raresteakfest.com.
