Houston showed up—and showed out—on Thursday night as DiningOut’s Top Taco transformed POST Houston in Downtown into a high-energy culinary battleground pulsing with flavor, music, and competition.
36 of the city’s top chefs fired up their stations, delivering a nonstop stream of inventive and tradition-rooted tacos to a packed crowd of eager guests. From the moment First Taste doors opened at 6 p.m., the atmosphere carried a dual identity: part tasting event, part late-night celebration. The scent of sizzling premium meats from Buckhead Meat & Seafood filled the air, while tequila and mezcal tastings flowed freely alongside craft cocktails, beer, and wine.
Live entertainment from Grupo Latitude on the main stage set the tone, while lucha libre matches injected bursts of spectacle throughout the night—reminding attendees that Top Taco is as much about showmanship as it is about skill.
Across the venue, standout participants including El Tiempo, Loro, Urbe, Coastline Pizzeria, the Original Ninfa’s, La Calle, Space City Birria, and dozens more brought their A-game, pushing boundaries in both Traditional and Creative Taco categories. At the same time, 11 restaurants and spirits brands went head-to-head in a spirited cocktail competition, showcasing inventive libations that rivaled the creativity coming out of the taco kitchens.
A separate section designated exclusively for VIP guests offered an elevated experience in which six restaurants, like Eastbound Barbecue and Gulf & Prairie, served up specialty asada barbecue tacos, which were also judged. VIP guests were privy to a special Buckhead meat display, photo ops, private bars, and lounge seating—all with the twinkling Downtown skyline as a backdrop.
Beneath the party atmosphere, the stakes were real. Chefs competed head-to-head in a judged championship format, with culinary insiders including Sylvia Casares, chef-owner of Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen, Ana Beavan, owner of Cuchara, Carlos Hernandez of Great Day Houston, Greg Morago, former Food Editor of the Houston Chronicle, and DiningOut writers Lorretta Ruggiero and Minh Truong, evaluating entries for Critic’s Choice honors. Meanwhile, hundreds of attendees cast their votes for People’s Choice—ensuring that both expert precision and crowd appeal played a role in determining the night’s winners.
As the evening built toward its finale, the crowd gathered for the dramatic on-stage awards ceremony, where Houston’s taco champions were officially crowned.
