Morning espresso, afternoon spritzes, and candlelit dinners will soon define a new era at Market Square Park.
Petite Lucie, a French-inspired café, bakery, and garden bar from Houston hospitality group Culinary Matters, will soft open Saturday, May 30, at 301 Milam Street in Downtown Houston. The all-day concept will bring coffee, pastries, cocktails, dinner, and expansive outdoor gathering space to one of the city’s most historic public parks.
The concept comes from chefs Omar Pereney and Sahira Malherbe, the duo behind Culinary Matters, a restaurant consulting agency specializing in menu development, operations, training, and interior design. Pereney, a Venezuelan-born chef who first gained attention as a young television personality in Latin America, moved to Houston in 2014 to help open Uptown seafood restaurant Peska. Together, he and Malherbe have since become known for a style of hospitality defined by refined service and a storytelling-driven approach to food.
At Petite Lucie, that vision takes shape as an all-day café designed to evolve with the rhythm of the neighborhood throughout the day.
“At its core, Petite Lucie is about creating moments of escape and discovery in the middle of the city,” Pereney said in a press release. “We wanted to build something romantic but approachable—a place where someone can stop in for a croissant and espresso in the morning, meet friends for cocktails in the afternoon, or linger over a casual dinner under the stars at night.”
The park sits on the site of Houston’s original City Hall and is surrounded by some of the city’s oldest commercial buildings, giving the project a built-in sense of history. Petite Lucie leans into that backdrop with a design by Gensler featuring Art Deco-inspired structures, a covered dining pavilion, an indoor-outdoor cocktail bar, and an open kitchen woven into the park’s lawns and gardens. Nearby, a future outpost of Henderson & Kane General Store will add to the district’s growing mix of culinary and retail choices.
Open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Petite Lucie’s menu draws from French café culture while maintaining a distinctly Houston sensibility. Pastries from chef Diana Nadira and the team behind Love Croissants will include coffee buns, croissants, pain au chocolat, key lime tarts, and blueberry Earl Grey scones. Savory offerings will include breakfast croissants, truffled fries, coquillettes au jambon, and steak frites.
Meanwhile, the beverage program is designed to carry guests from morning to night, with espresso, matcha, seasonal cocktails, botanical spritzes, aperitifs, and a wine list overseen by Advanced Sommelier Jaime de Leon. Guests can expect French producers, chillable reds, bright whites, and sparkling selections. Large-format bottles, a shaded outdoor bar, and a custom St-Germain cart serving rotating cocktails during peak hours and special events will give the space a lively, celebratory atmosphere.
Petite Lucie arrives as Downtown Houston continues evolving into both a neighborhood and destination, with the café positioned near the newly completed Main Street Promenade and within walking distance of the Theater District, hotels, sports venues, and the convention district.
Timed to coincide with the promenade’s Grand Opening Block Party, the opening adds another hospitality-driven gathering place to Market Square Park’s growing lineup of concerts, markets, movie nights, and community events.
