Our country turns 250 this weekend—and what a food story it has to tell. From news of that first harsh winter when Native Americans shared their knowledge of the land and its bounty; to the culinary traditions carried and preserved by enslaved Africans; to the recipes and foodways brought by generations of immigrants; American food has always been shaped by many cultures and countless hands.
Once, meals were exchanged alongside the day’s news in colonial taverns. Today, that history lives on in the diverse restaurants and cuisines found across the country. Phoenix is no exception. Here in the 48th state, we blend the flavors and ingredients of Mexico, our neighboring states, and the traditions of the Indigenous peoples who first cultivated this land.
As I share this week’s restaurant news with you, I hope you’ll celebrate the flavors, traditions, and cuisines that make you feel most at home. Because, in many ways, our tables tell the story of America itself—who we were, who we are, and who we’re still becoming.
Now, let’s dig in.
The 411
Buc-ee’s is a Big Deal ‘Round Here
The famous Texas gas station launched its first Arizona location off the I-10 in Goodyear last week. Thousands of people lined up to be the first through the doors of the mega gas station to experience the famed service, clean bathrooms, and well, the food. Caramel corn treats, sliced brisket sandwiches, and freshly made Beaver chips have a reputation for greatness. I guess we’ll have to go ourselves to find out if they are worth the trip.
Independents Week
Phoenicians are encouraged to eat local this week from June 29 through July 7, and post on social media using #IndieWeekAZ and #LocalFirstAZ for a chance to be reposted on Local First Arizona’s Instagram. For a list of certified local businesses, visit localfirstaz.com/directory.
Kids Eat Free Tuesdays
Pita Jungle surprised me last year on a random Tuesday night when I learned all three of my kids would eat free—and now the goodness is continuing through July. But that’s not all! The restaurant is also offering an “Inflation Busters” menu with select tacos, wraps, and hummus priced between $2 and $3. Your pocketbook and your stomach will thank you.
Party Like It’s 1776
We’ve been chatting with local restaurants and resorts to bring you a few ways to celebrate America’s big birthday. To start with, the “Red, White & Cool” celebration at WestWorld in Scottsdale returns for its 13th year with fireworks and an all-you-can-eat backyard barbecue from M Culinary Concepts. Expect an all-American spread of burgers, hot dogs, barbecue brisket sandwiches, potato salad, apple cobbler, and even a giant cupcake American flag display.
Not feeling the urge to man the grill this year? Newly opened il Bracco Scottsdale has a Fourth of July To-Go Package July 3-5 featuring combo sandwiches, chopped salads, and its signature frozen Braccos.
If you’re looking for more of a party, head to The Hot Chick for its annual “Glizzy Party,” featuring $10 boozy snow cones, arcade games, and the venue’s signature midnight hot dog toss.
Or keep it low-key at The Wandering Tortoise’s all-day backyard celebration with cold beer, good food, and neighborhood vibes. (Local tip: best to ride share here as parking is limited during construction.)
On the Menu
Cowboy Country
Dust Cutter in downtown Phoenix prides itself on local partnerships with companies like Schreiner’s Fine Sausage, K4 Ranch, Queen Creek Olive Mill, and more. If you’re feeling like supporting local, head downtown to sample its new summer menu. Offerings like the Grilled Peach & Burrata Salad, Fire-Roasted Poblano & Herb Pasta, and Smoked Cuban with house-smoked pork are calling.
Fresh Seafood and Pizza Options
Craving Neapolitan-style pizza and refined seafood? Us. too. Marino’s Italian Kitchen & Bar has us covered. New menu offerings include crispy risotto with tuna tartare, goat cheese croquettes, and the Diavolo Pizza topped with soppressata and a Calabrian chili honey drizzle.
Don’t Miss this Week
Need some dining out recommendations? Try these three hot spots.
Wednesday: It’s July, which means we are headed to Miracle Mile Deli for the $8 hot dog special running all month long. The deal includes a hot dog and a drink, or upgrade for just $1 for a specialty creation like the Chili Dog topped with homemade chili. Through August, classic milkshakes and ice cream floats are also just $6.
Thursday: I just tried Chilte for the first time while writing our Mexican restaurant round-up, and it blew me away. Chef Lawrence Smith works magic out of the Egyptian Motor Hotel off Grand Avenue with new-wave Mexican offerings like the Chef’s Tostada and the Quesa Birria Tacos. You must try it and tell him I sent you. Bonus: don’t forget to tag #IndieWeekAZ and #LocalFirstAZ.
Friday: We plan to drop into Hash Kitchen for its festive $4 Fourth of July bites, including the powdered Red, White & Blue Cannoli Doughnut. Frankly, we’re always looking for an excuse to visit Hash.
