Houston’s Diwali celebrations are getting a skyline backdrop this month. POST Houston is hosting the second annual HTX Diwali: Shine Your Light Over Houston on Saturday, October 24, transforming the Downtown destination into a day-to-night celebration of the Festival of Lights with dancing, fashion, art, food, and music.
The free, all-ages festival begins at 11 a.m. and stretches across POST’s sprawling campus, from its Skylawn rooftop overlooking downtown to the X Atrium and POST Market food hall. Produced in partnership with Tx2 Dance Company, the event celebrates Diwali and its themes of light over darkness, renewal, hope, and community.
“Diwali celebrates light, togetherness, and new beginnings, and POST Houston was built for exactly that kind of gathering, a place where people from every corner of our city come together,” said Meredith Powell, General Manager of POST Houston in a statement. “We’re thrilled to welcome families, friends, and neighbors back for our second annual celebration, an evening of music, dance, food, and community, as we continue building a tradition Houstonians look forward to every year.
With 12 hours of programming planned, there’s plenty happening before the diyas glow and the dancing begins.
The festivities kick off on Skylawn with a morning yoga session and sound bath led by Black Swan Yoga. From there, the action moves throughout POST, where the X Atrium will become a cultural marketplace featuring local artisans, henna artists, the House of Devi Art Gallery, a community Medical Mela, and family-friendly arts and crafts.
Dance will play a major role throughout the day. Tx2 Dance Company will lead Bollywood and Garba workshops, while Houston Bhangra Academy takes to the rooftop for a high-energy Bhangra session.
“HTX Diwali is more than a celebration. It’s a coming together of Houston,” said Sonali Patel of Tx2 Dance Company, speaking about this year’s highlighted attractions. “We’re celebrating our culture, embracing our community, and creating a space where everyone can shine their light.”
Guests are encouraged to arrive in festive or traditional attire—and there will be another reason to dress up later in the day. The celebration continues with a Diwali procession winding through POST Market, followed by a South Asian cultural fashion showcase presented by Dakshin USA.
The location also makes food a big part of the festivities. POST Market, the development’s international food hall, will remain at the center of the action, giving festivalgoers plenty of options to eat and drink between performances and workshops.
As the sun begins to set, families can head back to the rooftop for Diwali story time before a larger cultural performance highlighting traditions from across South Asia.
The celebration shifts into party mode after dark with a community dance-along and rooftop festivities under the stars. DJ Sandeep Sulhan will close out the evening with a high-energy set overlooking the downtown skyline.
For Houston, the event offers another example of how Diwali has grown beyond private celebrations and religious observances into a highly visible part of the city’s cultural calendar.
