Ask Houstonians where to find the city’s best barbecue and you’re unlikely to get a short answer. You might not even get an answer within Houston city limits.

When DiningOut Houston asked its Facebook followers to name the best barbecue in Houston, readers responded with more than 400 comments and 42 different restaurants, ranging from longtime neighborhood institutions to some of the region’s biggest names in smoked meat. And after all that debate, Houston still couldn’t settle on a single winner.

Pinkerton’s Barbecue and Truth BBQ tied for the top spot, earning 36 recommendations apiece. From there, the field opened up: Corkscrew BBQ in Old Town Spring landed in third with 26 mentions, followed by Killen’s BBQ in Pearland with 19 and Triple J’s Smokehouse in northeast Houston with 16. No other restaurant received more than 14.

The results say plenty about the Houston barbecue scene in 2026. Diners remain fiercely loyal to established favorites, but they’re also making room for newcomers. They’ll happily drive beyond the Loop—or beyond Houston altogether—for the brisket they love. And, naturally, more than a few backyard pitmasters insisted the best barbecue in town comes from their own smokers.

Here’s how Houston diners voted.

Pinkerton’s Barbecue & Truth BBQ

Pinkerton’s didn’t have to win outright to prove just how devoted its fans are. The Heights-area barbecue joint tied for first with 36 recommendations, with commenters singling out its brisket and sides in particular. The restaurant’s newer location also earned enthusiastic praise from diners.

“Pinkerton’s for brisket, and their sides are better than most places,” commenter Judith Johnson wrote.

That affection helped Pinkerton’s edge well ahead of most of the field—even if it couldn’t quite shake its biggest competitor. Truth BBQ matched Pinkerton’s recommendation for recommendation, giving Houston a barbecue dead heat. The Washington Avenue restaurant collected 36 votes of its own and inspired plenty of passionate defenses from fans. While there were a couple of criticisms in the discussion—including complaints about price—they did little to slow Truth’s momentum.

Corkscrew BBQ

Corkscrew BBQ came in a solid third, despite reopening one of Houston’s favorite recurring debates: Does a restaurant in Old Town Spring count when you ask for Houston’s best? For plenty of voters, the answer was yes. Corkscrew received 26 recommendations, putting it comfortably ahead of fourth place.

“Corkscrew is the best,” commenter Kyle Von De Bur wrote, while also giving Pinkerton’s its due. The only recurring knocks were geographic technicalities and the possibility of arriving after popular items have sold out.

And Corkscrew wasn’t alone in stretching the geographic boundaries of the poll. Restaurants in Pearland, Kingwood, Montgomery and Crosby also drew “that’s not Houston” responses, suggesting that when Houstonians are craving barbecue, city limits are more of a suggestion than a rule.

Killen’s BBQ

Killen’s BBQ in Pearland landed in fourth place with 19 recommendations. Commenters praised everything from brisket and sausage to side dishes and bread pudding, making Killen’s one of the more well-rounded favorites in the poll. One reader called it the best overall barbecue joint in the Houston area, citing both its consistency and the sheer number of dishes it does well.

Triple J’s Smokehouse

Triple J’s Smokehouse rounded out the top five with 16 recommendations, showing plenty of staying power for the longtime northeast Houston favorite.

“Triple J’s, Hands Down!!!” Kenneth Richardson wrote, summing up the kind of loyalty the Homestead Road restaurant inspired throughout the discussion.

Triple J’s also represents another side of Houston barbecue that came through clearly in the results. While some of the region’s nationally recognized names dominated the top of the ranking, old-school neighborhood joints still have deeply devoted followings.

The Rest of Houston’s Top 10

Just below the top five, the race tightened considerably. East End favorite Willow’s Smokehouse & Tavern and Houston newcomer Terry Black’s BBQ tied with 14 recommendations each. Ray’s Real Pit BBQ Shack on Old Spanish Trail followed with 13, while The Pit Room and Gatlin’s BBQ each received 11.

Terry Black’s showing is particularly notable. The Texas barbecue powerhouse was new to Houston when the poll was conducted, yet it had already cracked the top 10—and some voters admitted they hadn’t even visited the Houston restaurant yet. Fans praised its dinosaur-sized beef ribs as well as the multiple carving stations that keep notoriously long barbecue lines moving.

Willow’s, meanwhile, drew enthusiastic support from East End locals, while Ray’s proved that a longtime Houston institution can still hang with the new guard.

Outside of Houston’s Top 10

The restaurants outside the top 10 may be just as revealing as the winners. Pizzitola’s Heritage BBQ and Blood Bros. BBQ each earned nine recommendations, while Roegels Barbecue Co., Goode Company BBQ, Demeris BBQ and Pappas Bar-B-Q each received seven. Burns Original BBQ, Brisket & Rice, FireCraft BBQ, Tejas Chocolate + Barbecue, The Brisket House, J-Bar-M Barbecue and plenty more also found supporters.

There was even nostalgia for barbecue restaurants that aren’t around anymore. Four people named the now-closed Luther’s Bar-B-Q, while Barbeque Inn and the old Beef n Bun in Spring Branch surfaced in the conversation, too.

And then there were the home pitmasters. Roughly 15 comments answered the question with some variation of “my house,” “my backyard” or a relative’s smoker. In fact, the top comment by likes was one of those very answers.

That may be the most Houston result of all. In a region overflowing with serious barbecue restaurants, diners still believe the toughest competition might be smoking away in somebody’s backyard. As for picking one restaurant above all the others? Houston had more than 400 comments to figure it out and still ended in a tie.
