Gaby has been part of the Denver/Boulder food scene since 2015 when she moved to Colorado. While gradually losing her ability to eat due to six years of misdiagnosed food allergies, she became fascinated with the culinary scene. Gaby, aka The Restaurant Encyclopedia, has been DiningOut's restaurant coordinator for food festivals since 2017 and joined the editorial team in 2022.
Grab yourself a straw and prepare to satisfy your sweet cravings because it's time to rejoice in the deliciousness of National Chocolate Milkshake Day! The year 1910 marked a pivotal moment in the history of malt milk beverages with the invention of the electric blender. This revolutionary appliance paved the way for the transformation of humble malt drinks into the iconic milkshake we know and love today, complete with the creamy addition of ice cream in 1922.

This timeless traditional treat endures, and you can still revel in the creamy goodness at renowned chains like Freddy’s, Dairy Queen, Sonic, Shake Shack, Steak and Shake, Andy’s Frozen Custard, and dare I say,  In-N-Out. Denver even has its treasure trove of ice cream shops eager to serve up this sweet sensation. One of my personal favorites is Milkbox Ice Creamery inside Union Station where you can savor boozy variations of the classic milkshake while enjoying some time inside the iconic train station. Today, however, we’re here to introduce you to three hidden gems that might not have crossed your dessert-loving radar as go-to destinations for this delectable holiday. Join us on this mouthwatering journey as we unveil these delightful spots that just might have you declaring, their milkshakes ‘brings all the boys (and girls) to the yard!’

Rosie’s Diner

14061 E Iliff Ave, Aurora, CO 80014

If you’ve been missing out on the culinary wonders of Aurora, now’s the perfect moment to embark on a flavorful journey to Rosie’s Diner. Here, you can treat yourself to an unforgettable experience with their enchanting ‘old-fashioned handmade (chocolate) milkshakes.’ Step back in time to the fabulous 1950s, where the ambiance is steeped in nostalgia, complete with jukeboxes and retro-style countertops that transport you to a bygone era.

Rosie’s Diner also hosts “Cruisin Night”’s, where classic cars make an appearance, adding an extra layer of charm and reminiscence to your visit. It’s a delightful opportunity to relish the taste of those heartwarming family moments and embrace the spirit of fun and togetherness.

Slater’s 50/50

3600 Blake St, Denver, CO 80205

As a California native, I’ve had the pleasure of savoring the culinary delights of Slater’s 50/50, where they master the art of crafting ‘amped-up shakes’ to complement their mouthwatering 50% bacon, 50% beef juicy burger patties. Although they’ve been gracing the Denver culinary scene for a bit, you might not have stumbled upon their hidden gem nestled in the upper reaches of RiNo. But let me assure you, it’s an adventure worth embarking on, for the reward at the end of the journey is nothing short of delectable milkshake heaven!

Birdcall

8 Colorado Locations

While pondering which establishments to include on this list, I briefly entertained the thought of featuring the staple Cherry Cricket and one of my cherished milkshake, Bad Daddy’s. However, those choices seemed somewhat predictable. It was during this contemplative moment that an unexpected gem crossed my mind, and perhaps I shouldn’t have been so surprised, considering that the chicken sandwich is a close cousin to the classic burger joint. Nonetheless, the delightful revelation was that a local chicken chain, which has now expanded its reach to two additional states, proudly boasts a lineup of scrumptious milkshakes that perfectly complement their savory sandwiches and tender delights.

With an impressive tally of eight locations right here in Colorado, you won’t need to embark on a wild goose chase to discover one of these delectable milkshakes. Today, treat yourself to a sip of delight at your nearest branch and elevate your chicken experience to sweet heights!
