We’re switching things up and separating the news, the openings and closings, and the events into three weekly articles. That way you’ll get quicker snippets on what’s going on throughout the week. You may have also noticed we didn’t post much last week, our website was down for maintenance. But it’s back now and all the DiningOut cities are on the same page, literally.

As for this week, get ready to celebrate with one of Denver’s best Chinese restaurants, a beauty queen does ice cream, and a hot Mexican restaurant ups its wine game. We also talked to some chefs who are speaking out against ICE. Read on for more top news stories and send us any tips via Instagram or by emailing info@diningout.com.

Happy Anniversary MAKfam

This November MAKfam celebrates two years of running its popular Chinese restaurant in the Baker neighborhood. Chef Ken Wan and his wife and partner Doris Yuen opened Meta Asian Kitchen in October, 2019, located at Avanti Denver. Later they moved to the current spot, and have thrived with Hong Kong toast, flaming cocktails, spicy wings, and other tasty foods.

To celebrate, on November 3, and 5 through 7, MAKfam will bring back some of the legacy dishes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Diners can enjoy classic Crab and Cheese Wontons, Salt and Pepper Chicken, and Spicy Garlic Butter Rice Cakes. To add even more fun to the plate, MAKfam will be giving away 25 red envelopes on each of these days, first come, first served. Inside you’ll find vouchers for merchandise, housemade chili oil, drinks, and one super special MAKfam gift card worth $200.

More Excitement at Alma Fonda Fina

Chef Johnny Curiel has been busy at his flagship restaurant, from retaining the Michelin star to landing on North America’s 50 Best Restaurants list this fall. Now, he’s debuting a new wine program with sommelier Justin Mueller at the helm.

The wine selection has expanded dramatically, doubling the restaurant’s bottle and by-the-glass list. From the get go Mexican wines took center stage at the award-winning eatery, and while that dedication remains, now even more wine regions will be represented. Many of the new bottles come from small producers, each picked lovingly by Mueller.

While getting a new marketing director isn’t always news worthy, in this case Little Man Ice Cream has hired Sarah Marie, who has held three Ms. Colorado titles and will be competing for a fourth. Though she has beauty contestant cred, her real talent for this position comes through years managing her own marketing agency. At the same time, longtime Little Man staple, Basha Cohen, transitions to the role of director of community relations. Congrats to both ladies!
