Atlanta is home to a thriving local food economy, and Georgia’s long growing season means the city has some of the best farmers markets in the state. Each week the city blooms with hundreds of tents purveying local produce, fresh baked goods, farm-raised eggs, pastured meat, and other local goods like honey, candles, and specialty mushrooms.

Most Atlanta-area farmers markets act as community spaces as much as places to buy organic vegetables, offering cooking demonstrations, live music, and educational programming for all ages. Bakeries are also a staple at nearly every market, selling seasonal glazed doughnuts, sourdough bread, bagels, muffins, and plenty more. The bounty spills out into the suburbs, too, so residents farther out don’t have to travel far to find in-season fruits and vegetables. Most markets are open year-round, but the peak season runs  from late March through mid-November.

Here are some of the best farmers markets in Atlanta to explore this season.

Roswell Farmers Market

The Roswell Farmers Market aims to cultivate community alongside promoting a thriving local food economy. The market features live garden plants, fresh cut flowers, and produce that is grown no more than 100 miles from Roswell. The market is home to several local food and beverage businesses. Located north of Atlanta, it’s a convenient option for suburban residents. The market is located at Roswell City Hall and runs every Saturday from April through November, 8 a.m. to noon. 38 Hill St., Roswell roswellfarmersmarket.com

Since 2007, Peachtree Road Farmers Market has been a cornerstone in Atlanta’s local food economy. It is a “producer-only” market, meaning it requires vendors to sell only what they grow or produce themselves, creating a direct connection between producer and consumer. The market often features live musicians, various pop-ups, and other programming centered on kids and healthy eating. The market opens in March and runs through December on Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to noon. 2744 Peachtree Rd., Atlanta peachtreeroadfarmersmarket.com
