Avalanche Food Group, known locally for operating Twin Peaks and Bread Zeppelin locations, is giving back to educators ahead of the new school year. The Houston-based restaurant group will award more than $50,000 in teacher grants to nearly 100 Texas educators during a special check presentation on Saturday, August 15 at Twin Peaks Kirby (4527 Lomitas St.) The grants, funded through Avalanche Food Group’s annual back-to-school fundraising campaign, will help teachers purchase classroom supplies, educational materials and other essentials that are often paid for out of pocket. More than 400 educators were nominated for this year’s program, with recipients invited to a breakfast celebration recognizing their contributions to students and communities across Texas. Over the past three years, the company’s teacher initiatives have raised more than $175,000 to support classrooms statewide.
HEINEKEN USA and OpenTable have teamed up on a first-of-its-kind pilot program in Houston that allows diners to designate a driver during the reservation process, making it easier to plan ahead before a night out. Running through Sunday, October 4, the initiative is available at 10 Houston restaurants, including Federal American Grill, Goode Company Seafood, Morton’s, Truluck’s, among others. Guests who reserve through the program’s dedicated OpenTable page can name a designated driver in advance, with select participants receiving complimentary Heineken 0.0 and discounted rideshare vouchers through SafeRides.org. Houston was chosen to launch the pilot after survey data found that many local diners have underestimated their level of intoxication or driven after drinking because they felt they were the “most sober” person in their group. More information is available at us.heineken.opentable.com.

Hot off of receiving its 2026 James Beard Foundation Impact Award, Southern Smoke Foundation, is expanding its Behind You mental health program to Colorado through a new partnership with the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Professional Psychology. Beginning Monday, August 17, eligible food and beverage workers across the state will have access to up to 20 free counseling sessions, available both in person and via telehealth at no cost to employees or employers. The expansion addresses a growing need for accessible mental health care in the hospitality industry, where long hours, high stress and financial barriers often prevent workers from seeking treatment. Founded by Houston chef Chris Shepherd, the nonprofit has awarded more than $16.5 million in emergency relief and provided access to more than 12,000 counseling sessions for food and beverage workers nationwide.
