For over a decade T/aco has served the Boulder community, and now it’s giving back by donating $50,000 in restaurant gift cards to 50 Boulder-area families experiencing food insecurity.
“Boulder has always shown up for us, and this is our way of showing up for Boulder,” said T/aco Boulder owner Peter Waters, in a press release. “The holidays should be about connection, comfort, and good food shared with people you care about. We want every family to feel that sense of belonging.”

The gift cards each contain $1,000 worth of credit at T/aco. In order to ensure these assets go to those who need it most, the restaurant partnered with Whittier Elementary School, one of the city’s most diverse and community-centered schools. The leadership team at the school worked with family resource advocates to help identify families and hand out the gift cards directly through the City of Boulder Family and Resource School Program.
“We were able to distribute the first round of donations to families yesterday, and several people were moved to tears by the generosity,” said Whittier Elementary principal, Lucas Ketzer. “I could see and feel the relief and joy on their faces, and hear it in their words of gratitude.”

He added that many families told him they had plans to go to T/aco to celebrate. The restaurant boasts over 20 types of tacos from classic carnitas and asada to more unique combinations such as Korean barbecue, Philly Cheesesteak, and veggie tacos with roasted squash. There’s something for everyone too, including vegan options, gluten free, and kid friendly.
“I had no idea the impact would be this significant. It has been truly transformational and is a powerful reminder that there are people in our community who are deeply committed to lifting others up,” continued Ketzer in a statement. “T/aco’s team is special, and we appreciate them more than words can express.”
Waters decided to share these gift cards not only to help get food on the table for those who need it, but to welcome them into an experience that makes Boulder special. Given this gesture, it’s obvious T/aco is more than just a place to eat good tacos, but a true community institution.
