Houston’s spring food calendar is heating up yet again. DiningOut’s Top Taco, the nationally touring culinary showdown that has carved out a reputation for spectacle and serious competition, is returning to POST Houston (401 Franklin Street) on Thursday, April 23 with a sharper edge and a bigger roster. The event is a citywide hunt for Houston’s best taco, as chefs face off for top honors decided upon by both judges and attendees.

Now in its third year in Houston, Top Taco transcends the typical food festival format, emerging instead as a high-stakes showcase of culinary creativity and competition. More than 35 of the city’s top restaurants—from stalwarts like El Tiempo to modern players like Urbe, Loro, and newcomer Johnny Rita’s—will transform the Downtown venue into a high-energy arena into a full-throttle culinary battleground where tacos take center stage and chefs compete for bragging rights.
With the purchase of a ticket, guests can indulge in unlimited tacos alongside tequila and mezcal tastings, craft cocktails, and a full lineup of beverage offerings designed to match the energy of the competition. Set against the backdrop of Downtown Houston’s skyline, the outdoor event adds a striking sense of place.
A portion of proceeds from tickets sold will benefit the Blackwood Educational Land Institute, supporting efforts to connect younger generations with food systems, agriculture, and environmental sustainability—an increasingly relevant mission in a city where food culture and climate realities intersect.

What distinguishes Top Taco from the city’s crowded festival circuit is its refusal to stay in one lane. Participants compete in Traditional and Creative taco divisions, while beverage professionals enter their own contest for Best Cocktail. A panel of food professionals determines Critic’s Choice winners, while attendees—armed with tastings and opinions—decide the People’s Choice, creating a rare dual-track judgment system that blends expertise with public sentiment.
Add in mezcal and tequila sampling, craft cocktails, live music from Grupo Latitude, ample photo ops, and lucha libre wrestling, and the night leans into sensory overload by design.

Since its debut in Denver in 2014, Top Taco has grown from a regional tasting event into a nationally recognized platform where chefs compete not just for titles, but for broader visibility beyond their kitchens. Its expansion into Houston in 2024 underscored the city’s rising influence in the national dining landscape, positioning it alongside other major culinary markets.
Today, Houston serves as a key stop on DiningOut’s robust 2026 event circuit, which spans the country with high-energy competitions like RARE Steak Championship, Chicken Fight & Burger Brawl, and the Surf Seafood Challenge—each designed to spotlight top local culinary talent while engaging audiences in immersive, competition-driven experiences.

Tickets to Top Taco are available now, with attendees restricted to 21 and up. VIP entry begins at 6 p.m. and general admission at 7 p.m. If the past two years are any indication, the real draw isn’t just who wins—it’s the spectacle of watching a city’s culinary identity play out, one taco at a time.
