Nearly 20 years since its inception, Sonoma remains one of the city’s most beloved destinations for lingering wine visits in Houston. Its longevity is a testament to sommelier and owner, Farrah Cauley, who has nurtured the concept since opening its original location at Upper Kirby and evolving with Houston’s ever-changing culinary landscape. Like its name suggests, the bar feels like an escape into a northern California wine room where knowledgeable wine pourers await with worthy bottles.
The Upper Kirby location closed its doors permanently earlier this year, but Cauley has since found success with newer outposts in Garden Oaks and Katy, where Sonoma has become more than just a neighborhood wine bar. With regular wine tastings featuring interesting producers, year-round events that foster community, and space for private gatherings, the longstanding wine hangout has become fully engrained in two budding pockets of the city.

As a heavyweight of Houston’s wine scene, Cauley will take over DiningOut’s Instagram on Thursday, October 30 to give Houstonians an inside look at a day in her life operating Sonoma.
The Sommelier
Cauley is a native Houstonian and certified sommelier, with a wealth of experience in hospitality. She honed her chops working at resorts in California, Florida, and Hawaii. Upon returning to Houston, her passion for the world of wine, plus her love for service, was the inspiration to open Sonoma.
“After visiting wine country, I wanted to recreate that sense of connection here in Houston—a place where guests can explore great wines, share beautiful food, and feel part of a community,” she explains.

Her vision was to create a space reminiscent of wine country that was approachable, elevated, and most importantly, centered around connection. “Sonoma is where wine, food, and community meet.”
The Wine Bar
Sonoma’s two current locations each have their own individual personalities—Katy with its home in the Stableside development surrounded by shops and restaurants; and Garden Oaks, set adjacent to the main lawn at the Stomping Grounds, a family-friendly destination that is home to restaurants like La Mex and Bollo Woodfired Pizza. The bar’s signature yellow umbrellas that dot the patios make it a cinch to find.

Beyond regular wine drinking days, Sonoma keeps its calendar packed with tastings that loyal customers and those in the know keep their eyes and ears peeled for. In the new year, Cauley says guests can expect even more themed tastings, winemaker events, and interactive classes that will scratch the itch for wine discovery.
Like any good restaurant or bar, Sonoma’s strengths come from its staff, starting with Cauley. “It’s our people that make Sonoma special,” she says. We lead with hospitality, grow together, and create a space that feels like home—one pour at a time.”
The Takeover
Those who tune in to Cauley’s Instagram takeover on Thursday, October 30 will get an “unfiltered look” into what it’s like running a small wine bar with multiple Houston-area locations. A day in her life includes morning meetings, event planning, cheese tastings, visits from wine reps, and of course, welcoming guests into Sonoma day and night.
Cauley teases it won’t be all work. Viewers can expect plenty of wine tasting.

Tune in to DiningOut’s Instagram on Thursday, October 30 to watch a day in the life of Farrah Cauley, and get the chance to win a $100 gift card to Sonoma.
